Last night in an event chaired by Baroness Morris of Bolton, Katerina Dalacoura, Senior Lecturer in International Relations at LSE and Noman Benotman, Senior Analyst at Quilliam, discussed the critical question of Islam and democracy in the Middle East in front of a full audience including the Algerian Ambassador and several Peers.
Dr Dalacoura explained how the ‘Turkey model’ of an Islamist party working within a democratic system has influenced Islamist groups in Egypt and Tunisia. Noman Benotman then went on to describe the different types of Islamist, with a particular insight into Libyan jihadist groups and their potential for participation in Libyan democratic processes. The discussion continued with questions from Lord Ahmed and Robin Kealy amongst others, focusing on what kind of relationship Britain should forge with Islamist parties in the Middle East.
