What we do

CMEC was set up by Sir Dennis Walters in 1980 under Margaret Thatcher’s Government, following her signature of the Venice Declaration of the European Union, to ensure that Conservative MPs and Peers understand the Middle East.

By bringing Conservative parliamentarians together with leading experts, running events in Westminster and Parliamentary delegations we promote the discussion of UK foreign policy in the Middle East to ensure that this policy is grounded in a deep understanding of the complexities of the region. We believe that greater expertise in Middle Eastern affairs among Conservative Parliamentarians will enable the Government to produce a better policy framework for the Middle East and advance the UK’s bi-lateral interests across the region.
