CMEC Statement on Syria Aid Convoy Attack

21st September 2016

As longstanding friends of Syria we condemn in the strongest terms possible the attack on the aid convoy near the rebel-held town of Urum al-Kubra in Syria on 20th September.

This incident, which according to the UN and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, has killed twelve civilians including Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteers and drivers, is a humanitarian outrage.

The result is that critical aid has been prevented from reaching desperate civilians. There is no justification whatsoever for the callous targeting of brave and selfless humanitarian workers.

Whether this attack was perpetrated by Syrian or Russian aircraft remains to be seen. But if this attack is found to be deliberate it would amount to a war crime and those responsible must be held to account.

This barbaric act must not be allowed to undermine the ceasefire that has been in place since last week and is Syria’s best hope for political transition to a peaceful future.
