CMEC well represented at Foreign Office Questions

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has rejected calls to sanction the Israeli embassy in London after one of its diplomats was secretly filmed discussing with a Conservative staffer how British officials with a pro-Palestinian stance could be “taken down.” Speaking in the House of Commons during Foreign Office Questions yesterday, Mr Johnson said diplomat Shai Masot was no longer working in London and that the Israeli embassy had issued a full apology. The Foreign Secretary told MPs he considered the matter closed. Mr Johnson was challenged by CMEC Chairman Sir Hugo Swire, who asked him to explain why Britain had not summoned the Israeli ambassador. Watch here

During the question session, CMEC President Sir Nicholas Soames pointed out that it is only right that the UK supports the Saudi coalition in Yemen given its commitment to restoring the legitimate Government of the country. Watch here

Meanwhile, CMEC Vice Chair Charlotte Leslie used the session to point out how improving intelligence sharing and trust with Egypt is vital to UK security efforts in Libya. She also said that it is now time to resume UK flights to Sharm el-Sheikh. Watch here
