Emergency Syria House of Commons Debate

MPs will hold an emergency debate in the House of Commons today on the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria.

The debate was requested by former International Development Secretary The Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell MP who yesterday evening said Russia has “shredded” international law by providing military support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s bombing campaign of rebel neighbourhoods.

The intervention by Mr Mitchell and the granting of the debate itself will force the Foreign Office to set out how it intends to respond after Russia’s veto of a UN resolution calling for a ceasefire in eastern Aleppo.

Mr Mitchell is expected to tell the House of Commons that Western air forces must be willing to confront Russian military jets over the skies of Syria to enforce a no-fly zone and protect the citizens of eastern Aleppo.
