CMEC DELEGATION TO JORDAN REPORT

The report summarises the delegation’s main observations from the visit and aims to report the broad content of the main conversations that were held.

The delegation’s main take-away message was that Jordan is straining under a toxic triangle of challenges – supporting an unsustainable number of refugees, combatting drug smuggling from Lebanon and Syria, and an acute water-shortage. The repeated warning the delegation heard was that unless a peaceful political solution to the Palestinian issue was urgently found, the situation could erupt into catastrophe, risking destabilisation of the region.

CMEC also produced a podcast following the delegation. CMEC's Director Charlotte Leslie interviewed Rob Butler, Conservative MP for Aylesbury, Lord Risby of Haverhill, the Conservative peer, Dr Alia Hatoug-Bouran, the Jordanian senator, and Dina Al-Bashir, a member of Jordan's House of Representatives.
