Egypt 2017: towards stability and reform

It gives us great pleasure to publish Egypt 2017: towards stability and reform.

The authors, CMEC Vice-Chairman Charlotte Leslie MP and CMEC Director Leo Docherty travelled to Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh as part of a CMEC delegation in mid-March 2017. The delegation - which took place against the backdrop of pressing economic, security and human rights concerns - aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the UK-Egypt relationship and continue the longstanding interest in Egypt that CMEC has pursued since 2010.

The delegation met a wide range of Egyptian businessmen, journalists, government ministers, MPs, former diplomats and students.

Most notably, the delegation met with Egypt’s Foreign Minister HE Sameh Shoukry and the President of Egypt HE Abdel Fateh El Sisi who generously engaged the delegation in an expansive and frank discussion.

This report sets out the key findings from the delegation.
