GENERAL SIR GWYN JENKINS KCB OBE RM APPOINTED AS FIRST SEA LORD AND CHIEF OF THE NAVAL STAFF

The Ministry of Defence has announced that His Majesty The King has approved the appointment of General Sir Gwyn Jenkins KCB OBE RM as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, and Aide-de-Camp to His Majesty. General Jenkins makes history as the first Royal Marine to hold this prestigious position, marking a significant milestone for the Royal Navy. With an exceptional military career spanning over three decades, including service as a commanding officer in the Special Boat Service and as vice chief of the defence staff, General Jenkins brings substantial operational and organisational expertise to this pivotal role.

Defence Secretary John Healey expressed his confidence in the appointment, stating: "General Jenkins is a proven leader with a distinguished career in both the military and at the core of government. I know he will deliver in this pivotal role, making Britain secure at home and strong abroad." Upon his appointment, General Jenkins said: "I feel extremely privileged to lead the exceptional sailors and marines of the Royal Navy at this pivotal time for UK Defence. To do that now, we need to accelerate our return to a war fighting force that is ready for conflict, expand our modernisation efforts and deliver the Royal Navy our nation needs."
