Minister for Security Dan Jarvis MBE MP addressed Parliament on Tuesday, announcing that the Iranian State, including their intelligence services, the IRGC, and MOIS, would be placed on to the enhanced tier of the new Foreign Influence Registration Scheme (FIRS). Therefore, individuals sent to the UK by Iran will have to register their activity or face five years in prison. The scheme is expected to be operational by summer.
This policy is part of the UK government’s broader strategy to counter growing threats from Iran, which has been linked to multiple hostile activities. The government has also commissioned Jonathan Hall KC, the Independent Reviewer of both State Threats Legislation and of Terrorism Legislation, to review counter-terrorism laws in relation to state threats.
