Speaking at the UN Security Council, the UK Ambassador James Kariuki expressed the UK’s alarm over the surge in violence across South Sudan, warning that renewed conflict could shatter the progress made since the 2018 peace deal. He condemned the fatal attack on a UN helicopter in Nasir and stressed the urgent need for unhindered humanitarian aid. Ambassador Kariuki called for the immediate release of First Vice President Machar and urged all sides to commit to peaceful dialogue, welcoming the efforts of the African Union and IGAD to help mediate.
Ambassador Kariuki also underlined the essential work of UNMISS in supporting peace and protecting civilians amid rising instability. He praised the mission’s efforts to uphold human rights and deliver aid, and urged South Sudan’s leaders to allow UNMISS to operate without restriction. The United Kingdom, he affirmed, remains a strong partner for South Sudan’s path to lasting peace.
