'All at sea' - With Dr. Ian Ralby. Why maritime security really matters for MENA

CMEC Director talks to maritime expert Dr Ian Ralby about the critical but overlooked role played by events at sea, in MENA and beyond.

Charlotte Leslie talks to Dr. Ian Ralby about why politics largely ignores the sea - to our peril. He discusses the critical role of events at sea in all of our lives, and in the conflicts in MENA and beyond. He discusses the strategy behind the Houthis strikes on tankers in the Red Sea, how they have jeopardised Egypt's frail economy and the trade routes on which we all rely; how Russia's frantic search for a warn sea port after losing its base in Syria has helped fuel the terrible Sudan war.

Dr. Ian Ralby is founder and CEO of I.R. Consilium, he is the president of Auxilium Worldwide, a charitable nonprofit that works to support global harmony.

He is also a Senior Fellow at both the Center for Maritime Strategy and the Yokosuka Council on Asia-Pacific Studies, and former adjunct or affiliate of several institutions including the US Naval War College, the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies, and the Institute for Security Governance.

He previously spent 6 years as an Adjunct Professor of Maritime Law and Security at the US Department of Defense’s Africa Center for Strategic Studies, and 5 years as a Maritime Crime Expert for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s Global Maritime Crime Program.
